SEN Green Paper - Our Views

by NGN

Thu 14.4.2010 – 4.48

On 10th September 2010, Sarah Teather MP (Minister for Children and Families) made a call for views on how provision for SEN and disabled children and young people might be better improved. Responses to the call will be taken into account in the drafting of the Government's new Green Paper on SEN and Disability, written to encourage further development in equality for all our young people.

Central policy and general attitudes towards young people with social, emotional, behavioural, educational and physical difficulties have certainly improved; however, it is clear to NGN that progress could still be made in supporting those in our society who are most in need.

Having set up and run a Nurture Group in a large West Yorkshire Secondary school for the last three years, I can see that Nurture group workers would be very well placed to work on the proposed care plans. I find that we often coordinate agencies in order to provide the best life chance for the individual and improve quality of life. We have great relationships with parents and pupils alike. Because of all of this Nurture groups could play a key role in outcomes for our most vulnerable pupils. This should therefore be recognised, in funding nurture groups properly, recognising their worth at a time when poverty is on the increase in own communities and the symptoms of deprivation.
