ResearchResearch and Evaluations A Common Evaluation Framework The NGN has commissioned the education psychology departments at the universities of Manchester and Sheffield to develop jointly a framework to evaluate children's progress in nurture groups and to provide a common set of tools for practitioners. Establishing a standard approach to evaluation will provide a fantastic body of evidence to demonstrate the effectiveness of nurture groups, using data collected systematically from across the UK. The project will take place through the rest of 2008 and the first phase includes a study of current evaluations and the methodologies used. If you have evaluated your nurture group or groups and are willing for this infomation to be used in our project, please send your report to peter.farrell@manchester.ac.uk All examples are welcomed, however small scale!! The Boxall Profile Handbook David Colley, a Special Needs Adviser on the Isle of Man, is working on a project to modify the Boxall Profile for use with older pupils in secondary schools. University of Leicester Nurture Group Research Project - a national study Lead by Professor Paul Cooper, the Nurture Group Research Project was designed to measure the effectiveness of nurture groups. The study finds evidence to support the efficacy of nurture groups in promoting the social and educational engagement of children with SEBD and points to the positive 'whole school'effect that can be achieved by this form of provision. A distinctive feature of the nurture group approach is the usefulness of applying insights from attachment theory and constructivist approaches to pedagogy, when attempting to understand how and why nurture groups work. Such a theoretical perspective, it is argued, will help to strengthen and and enable the replication of effective nurture group practice. in particular, this perspective can help practitioners make sense of the Boxall Profile, which is a key assessment tool used by nurture group practitioners, and the data it produces. For full details of the report's findings see the article inthe sebda journal, Emotional & Behavioural Difficulties (Volume 12 Number 3 September 2007) click here to download.
